"The life and works of author and creative-writing teacher Houston are highlighted in this five-part program. In the first segment, "Autobiography," footage shows Houston walking on the grounds of her Colorado ranch, driving along the open highway, doing readings of her novel Sight Hound (2005), and speaking frankly about her difficult childhood. An extensive collection of personal photographs includes those of Houston as a youngster and as a young woman partaking of various extreme sports (to conquer childhood fears, she says) in exotic locales. Intercutting the personal revelations is footage of an actor interpreting scenes from Sight Hound. In other segments, Houston shares personal insights on the writing process and discusses her award-winning short stories, many of them appearing in such magazines as O, Elle, and Outside.
